Mount Vernon celebrates the 250th birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette and his historic friendship with George Washington with three new French furniture lines now available from Caperton Furnitureworks, Taylor King, and Durham Furniture. The collections draw upon the French influence that was found in Mount Vernon’s furnishings. These sophisticated furniture lines can be found on each of the company’s websites where consumers will be directed to the nearest retail store carrying the product. “We are proud to be represented by these three quality companies – all solid wood manufacturers with furniture produced in North America,” said Beverly Addington, Director of Licensing for Historic Mount Vernon. “Not only do they value quality craftsmanship, they pride themselves in being associated with Mount Vernon, George Washington and the values each represents.” Caperton Furnitureworks Mount Vernon’s first informal dining collection is being produced by Caperton Furnitureworks. This French-inspired collection is crafted of solid maple with a warm distressed finish and consists of eight pieces including three dining tables, two chair designs, a dining armoire, sideboard, and open cupboard. Taylor King Taylor King introduces French-themed upholstery and furniture designs with its latest line in the Mount Vernon Collection, inspired by the Marquis de Lafayette. Historical references can be seen throughout all of the new fabrics and frame styles in the collection. Durham Furniture Durham Furniture’s Marquis de Lafayette collection of bedroom furniture reflects 18th-century styling using handcrafted cherry and maple. All pieces feature gentle French styling with tapered and fluted legs, reminiscent of George Washington’s own dressing table. George Washington & the Marquis de Lafayette In 1777 Lafayette met Washington and the two men formed a life-long friendship despite differences in age and nationality. They were united by a common belief in individual liberty and a democratic society that has set them apart as two of the greatest leaders in modern history. Lafayette found in Washington a father figure (his father was killed in battle when Lafayette was only two). To Washington, who had no children of his own, the courageous Lafayette met his expectations of the ideal son.
