Bob's Discount Furniture spokesperson and television personality Cathy Poulin is spending part of spring 2006 raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society following her nomination as a candidate for the society's "Annual Man & Woman of the Year" campaign. "The minute I was informed of my nomination, I have to admit it hit home," Poulin said. "On too many occasions I have witnessed the devastation these diseases can cause. Recently, my dear friend Bob Kaufman and his family lost two family members to blood-related diseases. I accepted this challenge first in memory of Scott Mulready and Leo Kaufman." Then Poulin met five-year-old Nolan Frisbie, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Boy of the Year. She heard his mother, Tina, talk about the day a doctor gave her family the devastating news that, "Your son has cancer." "They have quite a journey ahead of them. But with the strides that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has made in research efforts they know that Nolan has a terrific chance of beating this disease and living a full life," Poulin said. Poulin's goal is to raise $35,000 by June 15, 2006. Each donation will help to support five local researchers at institutions such as the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT and Yale University in New Haven, CT and will also provide financial aide, patient services and support to more than 2,000 Connecticut families affected by blood-related diseases. Anyone who would like to make a donation to this year's campaign can do so by visiting Poulin's Web site at www.active.com/donate/ctmwoy06/ctcpoulin, where they can donate by credit card. They are also invited to send a link to the site to their friends and coworkers, or contact the society about corporate sponsorships. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's goal this year is to raise $104,000 to support its mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The honorary chair of the 2006 campaign is Connecticut State Treasurer Denise Nappier. Poulin is one of six movers & shakers from across the civic and business spectrum who are each fundraising in honor of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Boy or Girl of the Year. The candidates have nine weeks to work on their fundraising for the society, with each dollar raised equivalent to a vote for the Man or Woman of the year. The winners will be announced at a Grand Finale Celebration that will be held June 20, 2006 at 6 p.m. at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT. The Man and Woman of the Year will be featured in various Connecticut media outlets and have their names and company featured in USA Today newspaper. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Connecticut chapter is located at 300 Research Parkway, Suite 310, Meriden, CT. The society can be reached at (203) 379-0445 or online at www.lls.org.
