The High Point City Council recently passed a resolution to name the new transportation center “Mendenhall Station” in honor of retiring International Home Furnishings Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall. Mayor Becky Smothers made the proclamation at a retirement reception for Mendenhall. The board of the IHFMA also announced that it had made a contribution of $5000 on Mendenhall’s behalf to the Open Door Ministries, a homeless shelter in High Point. “The City Council is pleased to be able to recognize Judy's many contributions to her community and, particularly, her tenure as first president of the IHFMA," said Smothers. "Naming the transportation center for her is highly appropriate, since her vision and leadership guided and developed this facility." “I am surprised and honored,” said Mendenhall upon hearing the announcement, “I am very proud of what we have accomplished in the past five years through the hard work of my exceptional staff and with the outstanding support of so many in members of this community. I know when Brian Casey (the incoming President) comes on board he will appreciate this dynamic teamwork as much as I have.” Prior to becoming president of the IHFMA, Mendenhall was president of the High Point Chamber of Commerce. She has an impressive career of public service throughout the Piedmont Triad, including terms as mayor and as a city council member. Her involvement in leadership roles with community nonprofit organizations continues to be extensive and her influence extends far beyond the High Point city limits.
