More than 114,000 visitors rely on mass transit to navigate the vast High Point Market show space. The city of High Point built a new transportation facility located in the heart of High Point to deliver a user-friendly, state-of-the-art transportation experience to Market guests. Designed by Walter Robbs Calahan and Pierce in Winston-Salem, N.C., the new terminal enables market attendees to utilize buses in an efficient and simple way. Electronic signs with schedule and route information are conveniently located in the center of each passenger holding area for all bus bays. A centrally located kiosk serves as the hub of Market information and signage. The physical grounds of the terminal also feature improvements for the benefit of Market attendees. Colored and stamped concrete and asphalt add flair underfoot. The result is a bright, visually appealing terminal with plenty of space to accommodate Market visitors. “As we are constantly looking for ways to enhance the visitors’ High Point Market experience, we designed the terminal with the Market-goer in mind,” said Judy Mendenhall, IHFMA president. “The new terminal enables visitors to pass through quickly and easily, leaving more time for business and networking.” This is the preliminary phase of a larger project that includes a covering for the entire 200 block of Commerce Avenue. The shelter will include large, cantilevered covering of clear, painted glass, designed to protect Market visitors from the elements and create an open, airy atmosphere. Construction will take place in six month intervals between Spring and Fall Markets. The International Home Furnishings Market is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 80,000 attendees to High Point, NC every six months. The Market features 188 buildings, 12 million square feet of show space, 2500 exhibitors and visitors from over 100 countries.
