Anderson Laboratories of West Hartford, Vermont has just completed a study of the chemical and fiber emissions of Royal-Pedic's Organic Cotton Mattress and the word is : Great! Such emissions are a growing health concern for bed manufacturers and consumers. The polyurethane foam used in many beds are linked to toxic and carcinogenic substances. But not Royal-Pedic's. Results proved Royal-Pedic's Organic Cotton Mattress to be "the only mattress we've tested that showed positive results," according to Dr. Rosalind Anderson, director of the laboratory. Dr. Anderson is an international leader in the study of health effects of indoor air pollutants and has published numerous articles in scientific journals. She earned her Ph.D. from Yale University and studied respiratory toxicology as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. For many years she was head of the toxicology department at Arthur D. Little Consulting, Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. In 1987 she formed Anderson Laboratories, Inc., one of the few independent toxicology laboratories in this country. The study, conducted on January 15-17, 2001, exposed five groups of mice to the airborne emissions of the Royal-Pedic Organic Cotton Mattress. The mice showed no scientifically significant reaction to the airborne emissions. The method of testing, known as ASTM E 981, analyzes how laboratory mice react to the chemical and vapor emissions of a particular substance. Originally developed by the US Army, this standard industrial test uses mice because they are similar to humans in their reactions to chemicals. "The results are extraordinarily good," she said, in stark contrast to other mattresses Anderson Laboratories has tested that contain polyurethane foam. Dr. Anderson explained that the chemical processes necessary to create polyurethane foam are never perfectly executed. Consequently, the resulting foam emits various toxic and carcinogenic vapors. The reaction of mice to these chemicals in polyurethane-filled mattresses included irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat as well as difficulty breathing and some asthma-like reactions. "It's a mattress I would buy," Dr. Anderson said from her Vermont laboratory after analyzing the Royal-Pedic's results. "You've got one swell mattress." Royal-Pedic has been manufacturing the finest quality healthy mattresses since 1946. Royalty, dignitaries, presidents and celebrities have chosen Royal-Pedic beds for their best night's sleep. John F. Kennedy traveled with his Royal-Pedic bed; Ronald Regan and Wilt Chamberlain had theirs custom-made. Tom Cruise, Sharon Stone, and Steven Spielberg are just a few other celebrities who do their best work after sleeping on their Royal-Pedic mattress. Royal-Pedic mattresses are available in 50 retail outlets all over the country and via the Internet at Royal-Pedic.com.
