Brookstone Survey: One-Third of Consumers Would Rather Invest in Outdoor Spaces Than Vacation

Specialty retailer Brookstone unveiled new survey results that indicate a consumer focus on investing in the home this year. According to the survey, 63 percent of consumers prefer to entertain at home rather than spend time at a restaurant or bar during the summer, while more than 30 percent would rather invest in upgrading their outdoor space than a week-long vacation this year.

To meet the needs of consumers planning to invest more in their outdoor spaces, Brookstone debuted a new spring and summer outdoor living-focused catalog, new outdoor-focused store concepts in select locations across the country and a corresponding online expansion of outdoor products.

Consumers take pride in the appearance of their outdoor space. Thirty-three percent would entertain more if their outdoor space were suitable, while 22 percent admitted they bought something for their outdoor space that they saw at someone else's home. This reinforces Brookstone's focus on premium products that will turn mundane areas into ideal environments for spending time outdoors with family and friends.

"Every spring, consumers renew their yards, patios and pools to prepare for summer entertaining and outdoor living," said Ron Boire, Brookstone CEO. "Brookstone has all of the furniture, pool and grilling items to transform any backyard into an outdoor extension of the home."

Among the new products featured are collections of all-weather wicker and tropical hardwood patio furniture, as well as premium pool floats and loungers. An array of items that amplify outdoor entertaining, like margarita makers, sangria pitchers and a variety of unbreakable beverageware, also are available.

A focus on grilling also is found both within the catalog and throughout the survey results, with a quarter of consumers naming the grill as the centerpiece of their outdoor living space. For the 71 percent who plan to grill with other adults this summer, the Brookstone spring and summer catalog features grill accessories that give traditional tools a high-tech update.

"This catalog is an exciting change to our look and also is an indicator of the changes we'll be making online," Boire said. "In addition to our retail locations, our website is transforming into a destination for outdoor and home entertainers, travelers and comfort-seekers."

The new Brookstone outdoor catalog, now in homes across the country, also is viewable online at the newly expanded Brookstone.com.
