BJ's Wholesale Club Reports November Sales Results

BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc., reported that sales for November 2009 increased by 6.4% to $833.6 million from $783.2 million in November 2008. Comparable club sales for November 2009 increased by 1.0%.

The Company provided the following information regarding comparable club sales for November 2009:

  • Sales increased in weeks one and two, and decreased in weeks three and four.
  • Comparable club sales increased in the Metro New York, New England and Southeast regions and decreased slightly in the Mid Atlantic and Upstate New York regions.
  • Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic increased by approximately 3% versus last year. The average transaction amount decreased by approximately 2% and reflected continued deflation in a number of high velocity departments, including dairy, eggs, meat, milk, oils & shortenings, plastic trash bags and televisions.
  • Sales of food increased by approximately 2%. Sales of general merchandise decreased by approximately 1%.
  • Departments with strong comparable club sales increases included fresh bakery, breakfast foods, cigarettes, computers, frozen, health & beauty, household chemicals, housewares, juices, paper, produce and residential furniture. Weaker departments versus last year included apparel, dairy, fresh meat, oils and shortening, sporting goods, trash bags, televisions and video games.
