Some would call it an embarrassment of riches, while other would say it is deserved recognition for exemplary talent. Whatever the case may be, Christi Barbour, co-founder of the High Point-based luxury design firm, Barbour Spangle Design found herself in an unprecedented position at the recent ASID Carolinas Excellence in Design Awards. Barbour and her firm found they had won a first-place award for residential design only to be told they were in a tie — with themselves.

Barbour laughs as she recalls the exciting evening.

“It was very funny,” she admits. “We were so thrilled to have them announce we won first place. And then they announced our names again. It was really cool.” The two first place projects are located in High Point and Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Barbour Spangle Design also took first place in the retail design category for America’s largest furniture store, Furnitureland South’s rug gallery, designed by Emma Legg and Barbour, who also joined forces for one of the award-winning residential projects; and second place for kitchen design at Summerfield Farms, designed by company co-founder, Christi Spangle and Legg. The kitchen at Summerfield Farms is part of an events venue that includes a bridal suite, where the kitchen is located, Barbour notes.

ASID, The American Society of Interior Designers, presents the Excellence in Design Awards annually to recognize the very best interior design projects in a range of categories. The awards ceremony held in Charlotte in April lauded design projects across both North and South Carolina.

Although there are other competitions out there, the Excellence in Design Awards are especially meaningful, Barbour says. “It is judged by our peers, and it’s a high honor to be recognized by such esteemed colleagues for excellence in design. The high caliber of designers in the entry pool is quite humbling, frankly.”

The firm works in four main categories, retail and showroom, luxury residential, education and healthcare and commercial. In fact, during the last three years, the company has received awards in all of those categories.

“I’ve never thought about it before,” Barbour admits. “We’ve been really fortunate to have some good opportunities and we have amazing clients. We’ve been thrilled to be a part of all of these projects. It’s good blessings that our clients trust us and engage with us to do what we do. The outcome is that we have some spectacular projects. And our clients show us yet another level of trust when they allow these projects to be entered for consideration for awards.”

Barbour only brings it up when asked, but there’s also an incredible amount of work that goes into each of these projects.

“There is quite a bit of blood, sweat and tears that these awards represent,” she says. “We put our heart and soul into our work, truly. And winning these awards is immensely gratifying when you know how much work goes into them.”
