Braxton Culler Debuts 50 New Silhouettes at High Point Market

Furniture World News Desk on 4/13/2024

Braxton Culler, a major custom house serving the needs of retailers and designers with high quality upholstery, wood, wicker, and rattan furniture, is heading into the High Point Market this weekend with 50 new silhouettes emphasizing bolder colors, styles and textures, and a slate of new and thoroughly refreshed wood finishes.

Based here in Sophia, North Carolina, Braxton Culler employs more than 120 craftspeople and operates two manufacturing facilities. Plant One is devoted to the production of custom upholstery for which the company has long been known; Plant Two features four fully operational finishing lines for bedroom, dining room, occasional and outdoor. In fact, nearly half of everything Braxton Culler produces runs through its finish lines before it is delivered to dealers and designers across the country. This includes its popular accent chair, wicker and rattan collections, the feet on its sofas, and its steadily expanding bedroom and dining room offerings.

“It might seem surprising that a company known as a leader in bench-made custom upholstered furniture is touting its new wood finishes in High Point this spring, but the heart of Braxton Culler is customization, and our wood finishes affect everything we do,” said Donnie Lesley, senior vice president of operations. A product development and merchandising veteran most recently with parent company Classic Home, Lesley joined Braxton Culler at the start of the year to lead the renaissance of one of the few remaining American-made furniture companies.

As the Market opens, the company is unveiling more than 30 thoroughly refreshed wood, wicker and rattan finishes that coordinate with more than 600 curated fabric options. Among these,13 are new painted finishes that are completely new to the Braxton Culler palette and include Willow (a darker green), Mineral (a blue green that changes based on the light hits it), Pacific (a lighter blue), Ocean (a steely blue) and Mushroom (a gray).

“It’s vital to continuously update paint colors to stay relevant with current trends in home décor, and also to refresh stains which drift between cooler and warmer finishes over time,” said Lesley. “This season, we’ve updated everything—lowering the overall sheen level on what we’re doing in paint to an almost matte finish for a much more modern, contemporary feel. There are also five new and updated stains in a cooler vein with names like Java, Coffee and Hazel, and antiqued options for a total of 33 custom finishes from which to choose.”

Long known for a casual and coastal aesthetic, Lesley and his design team are focused on expanding Braxton Culler’s appeal well beyond its roots stylistically, imbuing product introductions this Market with a heightened sense of design and renewed energy across the board.

“We are embracing where Braxton Culler came from and at the same time positioning the company for the future,” the executive said. “Make no mistake, we’re not walking away from what made Braxton Culler great in the first place, but we are pushing hard to stay with or ahead of the trend curve, and we expect dealers and designers who see us in High Point this week will like where we are headed.”
