Family-Owned Scherer’s Furniture Going out Of Business After 127 Years

Family-owned and operated Scherer’s Furniture will close permanently after serving western New York for 127 years. Renowned for its beautiful solid wood products, the independent furniture retailer began total liquidation January 18.

Father and son co-owners Fred and Jim Scherer plan to retire after they close the doors of the fifth-generation business which has been in the family for five generations and has been a staple in the Buffalo community since 1897. Scherer Furniture boasts Western New York’s largest display of solid North American hardwood furniture and is known for offering affordable prices on these unique products and other top-of-the-line home furnishings.

Leading furniture promotional sales specialists Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) is handling all going-out-of-business details and events across the four-story, 15,000-square-foot store.

“It's a great privilege for PFP to earn the Scherer family's confidence as we oversee the final chapter of their esteemed business and heritage,” said Tom Liddell, senior vice president of PFP.

Scherer’s Furniture, located at 124 Genesee Street at the corner of Oak Street, opens its going-out-of-business sale to the public January 18. Famous name brands include Stickley, Kincaid, Hilltop Hickory, Amish, Superior, Howard Miller, Hekman, Wesley Hall, Gat Creek, Door County, Urban Barnwood, McKinley Leather, Whittier Wood, Weaver, Softline, Restonic, Bedtech, and many more.

Scherer’s Furniture stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founder, Frederick Scherer I, who laid the cornerstone of the company’s legacy in 1897 when he began renting a small space in downtown Buffalo and opened what is now the city’s oldest furniture store. His eye for excellent craftsmanship and dedication to customer service established a foundation for the company’s longevity and success. By 1939 Scherer’s Furniture had outgrown its original location, and Frederick decided to move the business across the street into the building it occupies today.

Frederick passed down both his name and ownership of Scherer’s Furniture first to his son, Frederick W Scherer II, and then to his grandson, Frederick Scherer III, who took over the family business in 1977. Fred Scherer III, now 90 years old, still helps with store operations and works alongside his son, Jim, and granddaughter, Kathleen.
