Salvation Army of High Point Presents "Others" Award

The Salvation Army of High Point recently reported the charitable endeavors of Furnitureland South founders, Darrell and Stella Harris, were posthumously honored on Monday, Dec. 21. The prestigious “Others” Award was presented to their sons, Jeff and Jason Harris.

The Harris’ philanthropic legacy will continue to be recognized by The Salvation Army’s establishment of an annual award, in their name, to be given to a local individual or organization in the community each year. The award will honor companies that mirror the same level of commitment to enhancing the lives of others through volunteerism and philanthropy, as demonstrated by Darrell and Stella during their lifetimes.

The “Others” Award is rooted in the history of The Salvation Army, dating back to the early 1900s when General William Booth, the Army’s founder, wanted to send a word of encouragement and direction to his officers around the world. Wanting to be thrifty yet make his message clear, the general sent this one word telegram: “Others.” Following that history, The Salvation Army honors an individual or organization exemplifying an extraordinary spirit of service to “others,” not only through support of The Salvation Army but the broader community as well.

According to Captain Bobby Jackson, Commanding Officer for The Salvation Army of High Point, the Others Award is only presented to the most deserving supporters, and must be approved at the national level. He explained that the spirit of Darrell and Stella’s support continues to this day through employee fundraising activities during the year, and culminating in an annual furniture sale featuring items donated by Furnitureland South. These events have raised approximately $600,000 over the past 15 years for The Salvation Army of High Point’s social services budget.
Captain Jackson also noted that Stella’s dedication to The Salvation Army of North Point was unmatched.

“Stella had a passion for helping people,” he said, “She wanted us to call her when we had families in our shelter who needed clothing or shoes, and she would go shopping for those mothers and children. She had a deep concern for others and would go out of her way to help.”

Furnitureland South President, Jeff Harris, echoed Captain Jackson’s sentiments.

“Throughout their lifetimes, my parents leveraged their business success to help as many people in the community as possible,” Harris said. “My mother’s passion for the mission of The Salvation Army was a direct reflection of the type of person she was – a devoutly philanthropic soul.”
