Plant Seven Announces New Exhibitions For High Point

Plant Seven, a 100,000 square-foot redevelopment project that aims to revitalize High Point’s downtown and act as a hub for entrepreneurs, recently announced new exhibitions and experiences, timed with the spring furniture market.

OPENING FRIDAY, APRIL 5

TWO EXHIBITIONS

 
Terra Incognita: Building on North Carolina’s heritage of ceramics, Terra Incognita explores how today’s ceramicists are advancing the art and craft of pottery through experimental approaches to materiality, form, and surface. The exhibition showcases functional and abstract works from talents across the U.S. who are pushing the boundaries of surface ornamentation, glaze, clay body, and construction. Lila Allen, North Carolina native, Managing Editor of Metropolis Magazine, and an Independent Writer/ Producer who focuses on art, design and popular culture is the Exhibition Curator.

Beyond the Mask:

Storytelling in Black Art + Design, the first High Point exhibition from the Black Artists + Designers Guild, aims to dispel historic stereotypes that have undervalued Blackness in art and design. Fifteen artist and designers from around the world will present diverse works from furniture and textiles to ceramics and wall art. The exhibition is curated by Leyden Lewis on behalf of the Black Artists + Designers Guild and sponsored by: ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME MAGAZINE.

Conversation: Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Plant Seven. Hosted by Malene Barnett, founder of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, and Steven Mandel, Aspire Design and Home Magazine.

Exhibitions are free and open to the public through September 30. Furniture and artwork is available for purchase.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Design Between the Lines (LIVE!) “Old School vs New School” Refreshments + Networking
Panel Discussion, Sunday, April 7, 3-4 p.m. at Plant Seven Loft. Host, John Conrad of podcast Design Between the Lines, leads emerging and veteran designers from the International Society of Furniture Designers (ISFD) and Women in the Home Industries Today (WithIt) in a lively discussion on industry methods, practices and trends. Among the participants, Catina Roscoe, president, ISFD and founder, Catina Unlimited Design; Aimee Kurzner, director of furniture, Currey & Company; Liz Moore, furniture designer, Otto and Moore and 2018 Pinnacle Winner for Caracole; and Christopher Sandomenico.

CAFÉ AND RETAIL

Plant Seven is also home to Mill Collective, a fair for emerging designers and artisans. New this spring, a pop-up shop and café curated by Raleigh-based textile designer Erica Gimson.

PLANT SEVEN’S FUTURE

At the heart of Plant Seven is a launchpad for forward-thinking entrepreneurs to create and grow their business. Opening Fall 2019, Plant Seven’s cowork space will feature private offices, conference rooms, and hot desks along with access to innovative design resources, including a cutting-edge materials library.
