(AFHF) is announcing a competition to create a new design for the award that will be presented to members of the American Furniture Hall of Fame beginning in October 2009. “The competition will be open to all furniture designers and students at design schools throughout the U.S.,” says Donald Belgrad, president of the AFHF. “We are looking for the best of what these designers and students have to offer. This award competition offers an opportunity for these artists to come up with an innovative and fresh award design that exemplifies the honor of being inducted into the American Furniture Hall of Fame.” The new design needs to include a representation of the flame as a symbol of the enduring spirit of our industry and the energy required to achieve the innovation, accomplishment and honor achieved by members of the American Furniture Hall of Fame. Furniture designers and design students who wish to compete in creating the new award can use a medium of their choice, including, among others crystal, metal, wood or acrylic. The size of the award should be approximately 12 inches tall. Submissions will be received between November 1, 2008 and March 1, 2009. They should be sent to the American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc., 202 Neal Place, High Point, NC 27262. Complete guidelines are posted on the Foundation web site, www.furniturehalloffame.com. The Board of Directors of the American Furniture Hall of Fame will announce the winning design in September of next year. Since 1989 during the Fall High Point Market, the AFHF has hosted a gala banquet to showcase and honor those individuals who are entering the Hall of Fame. The “AFFIE”, a wooden award carved into an image called the “torch of flame”, is presented to each winner who then becomes a permanent member and the recipient of the American furniture industry’s highest honor. The new award will replace the “AFFIE” and will symbolize the future of the AFHF as the foundation looks to its next 20 years.
