Lighting Designer Brian Orter To Speak at Las Vegas Design Center

Las Vegas Design Center at World Market Center Las Vegas announced that it will welcome well-known lighting designer Brian Orter on Friday, June 6, 2008. Orter’s presentation, “Waking Up Architecture,” will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. during the monthly First Friday event on the 16th Floor of World Market Center’s Building B, 475 South Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas. Brian Orter is the design director of Johnson Light Studio, a high-end architectural lighting design firm based in Manhattan. Orter first became interested in lighting design while studying theatrical design at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. He went on to study theatrical lighting and design at Purchase College. His theatrical work brought the attention of nightclub owners, restaurateurs and hotel developers. After more than 15 years in the industry Orter has worked on some of the most highly regarded architectural projects in the world including renowned nightclubs, hotels, restaurants and skyscrapers. As the design director of Johnson Light Studio, Orter now designs and manages dozens of projects from large-scale resort complexes to intimate boutique hotels. Clients have included Philippe Starck, Herzog and Demuron, Skidmore Ownes Merril, Yabu Pushelberg, Starwood Hotels and Four Seasons, among others. Attendees will witness Orter’s theatrical approach to integrating lighting design into architecture and telling a story with light. “Whether it’s retail, residential or commercial, focusing and adjusting the lighting is where the architecture wakes up,” said Orter, who is also a collected photographer. “Using filters, proper lamping and aiming the lights where you need them brings the architecture to life.” Orter said he plans to share : - How to create a “story” for your design - Design development - where the story and the technical begin to coincide - Determining the placement of coves, ceiling fixtures, colors and the types of finishes “First Friday” at Las Vegas Design Center features educational opportunities, unique showroom specials, hospitality and other exclusive offerings for the trade.
