The engineers at Leggett & Platt announced that they have created a premium, high-performance innerspring available at a value price point. They say that Leggett’s new VertiCoil innerspring offers a more advanced design than the most popular innerspring on the market today. “Companies try to position innersprings as outdated, but this is the most recent innovation in bedding technology,” said Mark Quinn, group executive vice president of sales and marketing for Leggett & Platt’s bedding division. “VertiCoil is the first helically tied, purpose-built innerspring introduced in more than a decade.” In order to create this patented wire design, Leggett developed machinery, which manufactures only VertiCoil, from the ground up. The Swiss engineered, computerized machinery is the most advanced wire forming machinery in the world. In addition to creating proprietary software and machinery, Leggett reengineered the wire itself. “This new process produces a thinner, lighter and stronger coil that maintains complete innerspring integrity,” said Tom Wells Jr., vice president of research and development for Leggett and Platt’s bedding division. “Engineering the desired coil height while maintaining the firmness level needed was a delicate balancing act. With this innovation, Leggett is providing the industry with high-performance, premium innersprings at a value price point over the more commonly used Bonnell coils. "VertiCoil’s unique shape creates a comfortable sleep surface that firms and responds to the body as weight is applied. The Active Support Technology™ found in VertiCoil reacts immediately to natural sleep movements, adjusting itself for proper spinal alignment and healthier, more restful sleep." “Leggett’s IDEA Center houses more engineers per square feet who are dedicated to the advancement of sleep technology than anywhere in the world,” said Quinn. “This group of innovative minds has not only developed a more advanced, better designed innerspring with VertiCoil, but also accomplished the task using fewer raw materials.” Marketing Assistance for Bedding Manufacturers To assist small to mid-size bedding manufacturers in telling the story at retail, Leggett created a fully customizable turnkey marketing program. The program materials are located on a CD and include counter cards, direct mailers, brochures and product sales sheets. From product to purchase, Leggett’s retail marketing packages provide beneficial point of sale materials for manufacturers to use in their retail marketing efforts. “VertiCoil is the culmination of Leggett’s historical leadership in wire forming technologies. It is emblematic of the cross-functional partnership between our product development, mechanical and electrical engineering, machinery development and marketing divisions,” said Wells.
