Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture, the largest independently owned furniture retailer in Massachusetts, announced plans to open a new store in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The company is purchasing a 12,000 square foot showroom at 20 Airport Road (across from the Cape Cod Mall) that currently houses a La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery. Bernie & Phyl’s expects to open for business by the end of May 2008. Approximately 12 employees will be hired to staff the Hyannis store and to handle the increased demands at the company’s Norton distribution center. With a focus on high quality furniture at great prices, Bernie & Phyl’s has created a highly successful niche in a very competitive marketplace. Started by the Rubin family in 1983, the family-run business has grown from a small storefront into one of the most successful furniture retailers in the country. Last year, Bernie & Phyl’s received the prestigious Better Business Bureau’s Local Torch Award for Excellence (for the second time), which is given to companies that embody the highest ethical standards. “We are very excited about opening a store in Hyannis. This is a market area that we have not served in the past and we think there is tremendous opportunity there,” said Larry Rubin, CEO of Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture. “This is going to be a small store for us, but it fits with our strategy to target markets where there are untapped customers who want stylish furniture, reasonable prices, and the exceptional customer service we are known for.” Bernie & Phyl’s is buying the 20 Airport Road site from the Cabana family, which has owned and operated the La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery there for over 30 years. Bernie & Phyl’s continues to actively search for other store locations to purchase in strategic locations throughout New England as part of its ongoing growth plans. Based in Norton, MA, Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture is the largest privately owned furniture retailer in Massachusetts. The family run business has five stores in New England: Braintree, MA; Nashua, NH; Raynham, MA; Saugus, MA; and Westboro, MA.
