The winners of the 2006-2007 Celia Moh Scholarship were introduced to the High Point Market this Fall as they participated in a three-day visit to the largest home furnishings show in the world. In addition to providing full-tuition scholarships, the Celia Moh Scholarship program funds the annual trip to the High Point market, allowing the scholars a chance to meet industry notables, attend seminars, discussions, and events, tour showrooms, and learn more about the breadth and scope of the home furnishings industry. This year’s itinerary included showroom tours hosted by Sligh Furniture, Fine Furniture Design & Marketing, Four Hands, Pulaski Furniture, and Metropolitan Home Collection, a visit to Viewpoint Studios, and a roundtable discussion on Internet marketing and consumer studies given by industry veteran Sev Ritchie. The students also participated in a luncheon and discussion forum with Furniture/Today publisher, Joe Carroll, and attended a morning of tours and mentoring provided by WithIt. This year’s class of Celia Moh scholars, whose majors range from furniture business management, marketing, and merchandising, to industrial engineering, furniture design and commercial design, are studying at Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, High Point University, Kendall College of Art & Design, and North Carolina State University. Other schools participating in the Celia Moh Scholarship program are Catawba Valley Community College, Mississippi State University, and Virginia Tech. The Celia Moh scholarship was established in October 2001 by furniture industry entrepreneur Laurence Moh to honor his wife, Celia, and provides full tuition scholarships for exceptional college students whose academic endeavors would lead to careers in the home furnishings industry. Scholarship applicants must meet strict guidelines encompassing grade point averages, instructor recommendations, and personal essays. The esteemed winners are chosen by a committee of home furnishings industry executives. Since the program’s inception five years ago, 33 full scholarships have been awarded to these future industry leaders. Many previous Celia Moh scholars have already begun successful home furnishings careers in positions such as furniture design, retail management, merchandising, sales, marketing, and engineering.
