Design Within Reach Announces Winners of Champagne Chair Contest

Design Within Reach announced the winners of its 3rd annual holiday Champagne Chair Contest, which drew more than 600 submissions from countries all over the world, including New Zealand, Ecuador, Croatia and Malaysia, as well as from 42 States. The Champagne Chair Contest, which has become a much- anticipated yearly event, challenges participants to create a chair no larger than 4”x4”x4” from nothing more than the wire, cork and foil of two champagne bottles, glue being the only permitted adhesive. The winning chair, called the Patrick Chair, was submitted by Krista Charles of Indianapolis, IN. Juror’s selections include: -Web by Tom Prabowo of Dallas, TX -Sara Chair by Hector Sanchez of Chicago, IL -Prosecco by Adam Lesser of Cambridge, MA -Garboe Chaise by Andrea Garner of Columbus, OH -High Roller by Allison Brummer of Van Nuys, CA The winning chairs, as well as many honorable mentions can be viewed at www.dwr.com/champagne. Judges included David Meckel, Director of Research and Planning at California College for the Arts; Michael Vanderbyl, designer; Topher Delaney, landscape architect; Jennifer Morla, creative director of DWR; and Rob Forbes, founder of DWR. They were tasked with judging the entries based on craftsmanship, creativity, innovative use of materials and durability. About the Winning Chair: Krista Charles crafted The Patrick Chair from a single cork, sliced with a jeweler's saw, Charles was “amazed at how quickly the character of the cork led to my design.” Topher Delany understood that immediately, commenting that “the chair seems to come from the essence of the cork.” The winning chairs and a select group of honorable mentions will set out on national tour beginning in DWR’s San Francisco-based Jackson Street Studio on March 7, 2006. The chairs will visit 17 Studios, from Las Vegas to Chicago to New York City, through October 2006.
