A recent announcement by US Airways of the restructuring of its fare program at Piedmont Triad International Airport may mean savings for those market visitors traveling from the 33 cities to which the permanent reduction applies. Tammy Covington Nagem, Vice President of Operations for the International Home Furnishing Market Authority (IHFMA) responded, “This fare reduction announcement is the latest in a growing list of transportation discounts available to travelers to the April 2006 Market in High Point.” Nagem reported that discount codes are listed on the IHFMA website for visitors flying on Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines, and encouraged travelers to work with their travel agents or preferred carrier to find the best fares from their specific locations. Free shuttles from PTIA, Raleigh/Durham International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, increase the appeal of the outlying airports. “We’ve continue to work to expand travel options with free or discounted services,” she added. Rental car companies, Enterprise, Avis and Budget offer discount codes, as does AMTRAK on its rail service to downtown High Point. Free shuttles, strategically located and liberally scheduled, also play a key role in moving people from Park & Ride lots in North and South High Point to the Market center. A total of over 3500 free parking spaces has tripled the amount previously available in past years, and resulted in an estimated 16,000 less cars per market seeking centrally located parking. This abundance of outlying free spaces has also served to decrease prices at the downtown private lots. The free hotel shuttle system features at total of twenty-five routes, serving 110 area hotels, with the trip to the Market center from the farthest (located in Winston-Salem, Greensboro or Burlington) lasting generally less than 25 minutes. According to Nagem the shuttle routes between showrooms are continually being reworked to serve larger areas and include more showrooms. Two services, with twenty-five stops each, run in the central area each day of Market including the Tuesday before, from 8 am to 8 pm, while free on-demand shuttles travel from the downtown area to outlying showrooms in High Point and Thomasville. All shuttle schedules and discount codes are listed on the newly enhanced IHFMA website at www.highpointmarket.org.
