Growth of the US economy stood at a healthy 5% (at annual rates) during the first quarter of 2000. Consumer spending has been supported by the wealth effect of rising asset prices, low inflation, low interest rates and – most importantly – by the good employment market and rising incomes. Real consumer spending surged by an annualized 8.3% in the first quarter, and an amazing 5.5% over the last two years. However, there are some signs which indicate a cooling of the economy. Higher interest rates will reduce the U.S. economy to a more sustainable pace next year. Growth in real gross domestic product may slide to 2.7 percent in 2001 from 4.2 percent this year. Influenced by the Fed's rate campaign, mortgage rates have been rising. Thirty-year mortgages are now at 8.6 percent, up more than a full percentage point from a year ago. It is therefore not surprising that new home sales have been falling for two consecutive months and residential construction – both single family houses and apartments – is decreasing. Largely as a result of rising interest rates, we are less optimistic about the stock market which has been one of the main drivers behind the current consumer demand. Retail sales are less robust than at the beginning of this year. Nevertheless, the overall consumption outlook remains favorable for the remainder of 2000 and we do not expect growth of real consumer spending to decelerate below 4.5 percent this year. Next year, consumer spending may decline to 3.1 percent. As of 1999 U.S. furniture consumption stood at $ 60.7 billion, up 6.5 percent from the previous year. For this year, we expect a similar increase (6.2 percent) bringing the market valuation to $ 64.4 billion. In conjunction with the general cooling of the economy, furniture consumption will grow only at an estimated pace of 3.4 percent next year. If our prediction is correct, the market would reach $ 66.7 billion. There is hardly any price inflation for furniture. Therefore, the indicated annual growth rates represent predominantly real (volume) increases.   Atlanta, GA June 2000: The 52nd edition of the Boston Curtain & Drapery Show, co-produced by Messe Frankfurt and Window Fashions magazine, and sponsored by the Boston Curtain & Drapery Club, will be held October 14-15, 2000 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI.
