RUGMARK Foundation held a successful benefit on Thursday, September 26th, in honor of Senator Howard Metzenbaum for his life-long commitment to ending illegal child labor around the world. Held at the elegant, 19th century headquarters of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, this was the first time that RUGMARK brought together its donors, friends, partner organizations, licensed importers and board members, so that they could get to know one another and to see what a difference they make in the lives of children in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Among those present were RUGMARK importer members Stephanie Odegard, Odegard Carpets; Ellen Kurtz, New Moon; and Orlyn and Marit Kringstad, Nordic Textiles & Furnishings. The event featured remarks by Chip Lyons, President of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Lyons shared some startling statistics, including that an estimated 300,000 children are working in the carpet industry in India, many under bonded conditions. He also spoke about UNICEF’s commitment to partnering with RUGMARK. “UNICEF supports RUGMARK because it’s so effective at dealing with the child labor problem and providing concrete alternatives,” said Lyons. Upon receiving his award, Senator Metzenbaum delivered a moving speech, reminding participants that millions of impoverished children don’t have anyone one their side. “These children deserve to live the same kind of lives that we want for own children,” Metzenbaum said. He applauded RUGMARK for helping to make some of these children’s dreams come true. “It’s sad,” Metzenbaum said, “all they want is to go to school and have a little food on the table. RUGMARK is one of the few organization on their side.” Between donations, a silent auction of photographs, and a RUGMARK carpet raffle featuring donated rugs from elson & company, Masterlooms, Inc., Minlam Inc., New Moon, Nordic Textiles & Furnishings, Odegard, Inc., and Ringing Mountain Imports, RUGMARK raised approximately $15,000 to further its work in South Asia.
