American residential case goods manufacturer, Stanley Furniture, announced that it distributed the first of two email communications notifying its California-based retailers of its actions regarding the impending California Air Resource Board (C.A.R.B.) formaldehyde regulation and the companyʼs plans for compliance.

In 2007, C.A.R.B. proposed legislation regarding the regulation of formaldehyde use in an effort to reduce the emissions from composite wood products and finished goods containing composite wood products that are sold, offered for sale, supplied or used in the state of California.

On January 1, 2009, the C.A.R.B. legislation became a regulatory order mandating that all domestically-made and imported wood furniture products containing composite woods meet certain formaldehyde content guidelines. The original regulation also contained an 18-month sell-through period for finished goods inventory enabling manufacturers, distributors and retailers to deplete inventory and floor samples prior to June 30th, 2010. This date was recently extended by the Board to December 31st 2010. In addition to outlining the details and circumstances of the C.A.R.B. P1 regulation, Stanley Furnitureʼs communication stated the companyʼs intention to be 100% compliant by March 1st, 2010, ten months before the required date of compliance.

“With so much experience in manufacturing furniture for infants and kids, regulatory compliance is simply standard operating procedure at Stanley,” said Kevin Bowman, VP of Sales for Stanley Furniture. “Our goal is to ensure that compliance transitions like these are seamless and that our retailersʼ businesses remain uninterrupted.”

Stanley Furniture will distribute the second of its C.A.R.B. compliance communications to CA retailers in late February 2010.
