The non-profit Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) announced that 14 top bedding manufacturers have joined the group with a commitment to increase awareness of the specialty sleep industry while initiating an SSA Green Initiative to identify, define and standardize how mattress manufacturers and retailers label “green” and natural sleep products.  The initial goal is to create definitions specific to the bedding industry of terms such as “Green,” “natural,” “all-natural” and “organic” by assimilating and organizing existing, accepted standards. The ultimate goal will be to create a certification program based on these definitions.

"The SSA is thrilled to welcome such a diversified group of A-list industry leaders to our organization,” said Dale Read, president.  “All are taking an active role in the SSA’s Green Initiative and had attended our recent Conference on the subject.”

The newest members of the Specialty Sleep Association include Cargill Biobased Polyurethanes, Foamex LP, Latexco-US/Latexco West and Organic Mattresses, Inc. (OMI).  With the trend in eco-friendly products gathering steam, leading manufacturers and retailers are looking for options and solutions.

Cargill's BiOH® polyols offer a responsible choice when it comes to raw materials. BiOH polyols are a soy-based ingredient for flexible foam used in upholstered furniture and bedding.

Foamex incorporate variable pressure foaming (VPF) technology to open-cell, highly breathable memory foams to natural bedding systems of mattress support rails, mattress cores, quilting layers and toppers.

Latexco is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of latex foam components for the bedding industry.

Organic Mattresses, Inc.(OMI), is the nation’s leading manufacturer of organic mattresses and bedding.  OMI is a full-circle environmental company committed to offering the purest and most comfortable organic mattresses and bedroom accessories.

Additional new members of the Specialty Sleep Association who have joined the SA to be involved in the Green Initiative include CPS Wood Products, John Marshall Company, Intertek, Keetsa Mattress, Wm. T. Burnette, Jeffco Fibers Inc., Suite Sleep Inc., Lenzing Fibers, Reverie, and White Knight Engineering Products.
