Frank Gehry, an internationally acclaimed architect and Pritzker Prize recipient, has been named as the 2018 Design Icon by Las Vegas Market.

As the head of Gehry Partners LLP, a full-service firm with broad international experience in academic, commercial, museum, performance and residential projects, Gehry has redefined architecture in numerous cities all over the world and continues to shape contemporary commercial and residential landscapes.

“Frank Gehry is indeed a design icon in every sense of the word,” said Robert J. Maricich, chief executive officer for International Market Centers. “His buildings have taken architectural boundaries to new levels, encouraging professionals and the public to rethink any preconceived limitations about what architectural design can be.”

The centerpiece of programming at Las Vegas Winter Market, the Design Icon Award honors an architect or interior designer who has made a significant contribution to the industry throughout their career. Now in its 12th year, the Design Icon Award seeks to both highlight the achievements of exemplary design and architectural professionals and to offer Las Vegas Market attendees an opportunity to connect with and learn from living legends.

Many of Gehry’s buildings are architectural landmarks across the globe and include: Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, Calif.; Neuer Zollhof, Dusseldorf, Germany; Chiat/Day Complex, Venice, Calif.; Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany; Olympic Fish Pavilion, Barcelona, Spain; Dancing House, Prague, Czech Republic; Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; and the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health that opened on May 21, 2010, in Las Vegas.

Officially the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, The Ruvo Center is a national resource for research, education, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and represents a collaboration between Larry Ruvo, who lost his father, Lou, to Alzheimer’s, and Gehry, a longtime champion of Huntington ’s disease research. Today, the 60,000+-square-foot Ruvo Center includes examination rooms, offices for health care professionals and researchers, a community auditorium and is the headquarters for Keep Memory Alive foundation, the Las Vegas Alzheimer’s Association and the Las Vegas Parkinson’s Disease Association.

“I told Frank that I was going to put his celebrity and talent to use to help cure chronic brain diseases,” Ruvo said in a 2011 interview with Architect Magazine. “For me, architecture was a necessary marketing tool. We wanted a statement that would show we were serious about curing a disease and would let the doctors know we were not underfunded.”

The 2017 Design Icon presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 30, at 3 p.m. in the WorldView Room, 16th floor, Building B. The event will include an overview of Gehry’s work and a Q&A session with Maricich. Admission to the presentation is free and open to Las Vegas Market attendees.
