Malouf, the upscale bedding accessories manufacturer, recently achieved a milestone in their efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint even more. The sleep products company held a “Flip the Switch” event to officially turn on and celebrate its new rooftop solar panel system, one of the largest in Utah, and eight electric vehicle charging stations.
The launch of its clean energy initiatives are part of the final construction phase of the new state-of-the-art headquarters, which Malouf announced earlier this year and plans to complete in early 2016.
“Ever since we decided to promote clean energy and power our new building with solar, we have looked forward to utilizing the benefits,” said Jake Neeley, the marketing communications director for Malouf. “Our team has fostered a culture of progressive thinking and cares about making a positive impact on the community. Flipping the switch at the beginning of the winter months, before the building is actually completed, is a reflection of our hope for cleaner air and greater environmental responsibility.”
The energy created from the solar panels will not only offset the majority of the new building’s use, but will also facilitate better air quality. During the winter months, the valley Malouf is located in, is known for its poor air quality. Malouf is ready to help tackle this problem by generating clean solar energy directly from their rooftop.
The solar system consists of 972 panels generating 314 kilowatts. It is the equivalent of offsetting annual greenhouse gas emissions of a cars traveling 765,993 miles or taking 67.7 cars off the road.
As a design-build and renewable energy electrical contractor, Hunt Electric was proud to be the key consultant on the forefront of Malouf’s innovative ideas.
Brok Thayn, Hunt Electric’s energy department manager said, “Malouf is a great example of innovation and environmental stewardship. Solar power is starting to become more mainstream for residential applications so doing something to the scale which Malouf has done in a commercial setting is something worth applause.”
Malouf’s product lines include Z pillows, WOVEN linens, STRUCTURES frames, SLEEP TITE protectors, and ISOLUS toppers. This comprehensive offering provides retail partners with the tools needed to enhance every mattress sale. Malouf now owns over one million square feet of warehousing space between the east and west coasts, allowing for streamlined shipping logistics and faster transit times.
