Classic Brands Adds "First Scan" Technology, Streamlining Tracking Process

Furniture World News Desk on 3/1/2019

Specialty mattress producer Classic Brands reports that it has taken a huge step toward stemming one of the industry’s greatest challenges -- buyer’s remorse -- with the addition of “first scan” technology that instantly generates a tracking number for UPS and FedEx shipments from its two U.S. distribution centers and lets the consumer know their mattress is on its way.

Because Classic is one of the industry’s largest bed-in-box purveyors, UPS and FedEx have receiving stations in its warehouses so that employees scan shipments on-site as they are loaded onto delivery trucks, eliminating the need for the shipping companies to scan and update tracking records later in the distribution process.

"Our experience shows that consumers are more likely to cancel an order during the timeframe it takes for them to receive that critical tracking number. Sharing that number instantly seals the deal,” said Michael Zippelli, president and chief executive officer of Classic Brands. “It gives consumers confidence that their new mattress will be delivered on time, and allows us to process orders much more efficiently.”
He said the technology is beneficial to brick-and-mortar retail customers, who no longer need to receive Classic products at their warehouse. Cutting out that step enables them to grow their business without additional inventory or warehousing expenses.

“Boxed bedding is on its way to becoming the most widely-used method of delivering a mattress, and our improved drop-ship capabilities relieve traditional retailers of much of the logistical burden and allow them to focus on marketing and sales,” said Zippelli.

The “first scan” technology has been installed Classic’s 225,000-square-foot distribution center in Long Beach, California, and its 400,000-square-foot center in Jessup, Maryland. A pioneer in the development of boxed bedding, the company’s entire mattress line can be roll-packed and shipped in a box.
