In an "E-Cave Experiment", Good Morning America picked two volunteers- Leslie Firtell and Darryl Hollar- to live in a sparse New York City apartment for five days. All they were given to survive was a bed, refrigerator, $500 a day stipend, and a computer with Internet access. Each day these two young professionals scoured the e-commerce world for the necessities and comforts of life. While items such as food, clothing and electronics were easily found and delivered, furniture seemed to pose a dilemma. Leslie's furniture hunting trials and tribulations were well documented. "Furniture: I really wanted to buy an inexpensive couch. I went to Ikea.com but they don't have online shopping nor do they list a fax number. Furniture.com is too expensive and they can't deliver by Friday!" she stated. Darryl reiterated similar sentiments about long delivery lead times when ordering furniture online until he found a solution. Darryl's search for furniture led him to online furniture buying guide FurnitureChannel.com. Conducting business solely through e-commerce and e-mail Darryl placed multiple orders, asking questions and receiving product information from FurnitureChannel numerous times during the week. "This (FurnitureChannel.com) is a good, intuitive site", Darryl said, responding to the issue of web-site user friendliness. When asked about customer service responsiveness while shopping on the World Wide Web, Darryl singled out FurnitureChannel.com by saying, "The e-mail customer service staff went above and beyond the call of duty to get my futon delivered to me." At the end of the five-day experiment, the only major furniture purchases achieved by the two "e-cavers" were from FurnitureChannel.com. The fact that FurnitureChannel.com succeeded is due in part to FurnitureChannel's excellent customer service support and FurnitureChannel.com's ability to deliver quickly using traditional manufacturer/distributor-retail store distribution channels.
