I assume that you (and friends or the super) have already tried to fit it in... but if not... If the problem is the width of the hallway the sofa may need to be tipped on edge and rotated around the door opening to get it in. You may need to take the door off. Some sofas are constructed so that the back comes off... but this isn't the rule. You may also be able to remove the legs. Beyond that, my gut feeling is that it isn't worth the effort and expense of having a re-upholsterer take it apart and re-upholster it in your apartment.

When I was at the recent High Point furniture show, I saw a great product made by a company called Check-a-Fit LLC. They make an adjustable box-like, light-weight tubular contraption that can be adjusted to become the exact size of a sofa or cabinet. Furniture stores and their delivery people can use it or loan it to customers. Once the device is adjussted to the size of a furniture piece. It can easily be manipulated to find out if there is any way to get the piece (with the same outer dimensions) into a room. It is great for new furniture, but I'm afraid that it won't help you at this point. - Russell
