Hello, We are a furniture retailer with an increasing internet business. We ship furniture through a carrier that is not blanket wrap, although we box and pad the items. We always purchase additional insurance against any damages. We just got word that an order of knockdown upholstered chairs worth thousands of dollars are all damaged (crushed, scratched). The box has not even made it to the customer yet. It sat lost in a warehouse for weeks, which was very unusual since it takes days to deliver and arrived at the final point for delivery broken open. The freight company is denying responsibility, since they did not pack the items. They have refused our claim, so what on earth was the purpose of buying insurance against damages? They also claim we did not ship as many chairs as we did. We have photos of the items we shipped. Do I have any recourse, or what steps can I take to avoid this in the future?

Additional information is necessary to answer your question. If the carrier participates in the National Motor Classification System and if the packaging is in accord with the NMFC packaging requirements, there is mandatory coverage. But even then, there are loopholes. There is recourse but you will need someone who works with these issues regularly. We have done this for many years and I may be able to help. Some carriers are much more reliable and have far less damage than others. Unfortunately, many carriers are incapable of handling furniture without damage. To prevent these problems in the future, a review of your shipping strategy is in order to minimize damage and minimize customer service problems. Check out my web site www.bolgergroup.com and call me at 740-503-8875 for further information.
