David Sherman, vice president of tax and internal audit for Sealy, was struck and killed by a hit and run driver while out cycling on Saturday, October 17. Witnesses said they saw a silver Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle hit Sherman and drive away from the scene of the accident.

Sherman worked at Sealy for more than 11 years and contributed greatly to the company’s financial improvements. He played a significant role in Sealy’s mergers and acquisitions, and financial transactions including Sealy’s IPO and recent refinancing. As part of his responsibilities, Sherman compiled the data for ISPA and market share reporting.

Sherman embraced life and pursued his passions with great joy. He was extremely athletic and loved the outdoors, and competed in marathons and cycling events. He participated in the Tour de Kale this summer, successfully riding the 135 kilometer (84 mile) summit with a time of four hours and 49 minutes. Sherman also loved music and had learned to play the violin in recent years. He had an adventurous spirit and spent the earlier part of his life living in Africa and Europe, as well as summers working in U.S. national parks.

Sherman was active in his church and community. Survivors include his wife, Ann, and his two daughters, Rebekah and Elizabeth.

A funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 28 at New Garden Friends Meeting, located at 801 New Garden Road in Greensboro, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Greensboro Symphony or New Garden Friends Meeting.
