Industry Icon Roger E. Magowitz Joins Customatic

Customatic Adjustable Bedz has recently announced that Roger E. Magowitz has joined Customatic Adjustable Bedz as executive vice president and member of the company’s senior leadership team. In this new role, he will focus on further developing key account relationships and working with retailers.

Magowitz’s accomplishments in both the mattress and furniture industry have been highly recognized by the home furnishings community. As a retailer, he ran a successful chain of mattress stores in Virginia, Georgia, and Arizona under the brands Mattress Discounters and Metropolitan Mattress. When Mattress Discounters was sold to Mattress Firm in 2010, he joined the senior leadership of the nation’s largest mattress retailer to head its efforts in community relations and philanthropy.

His charitable work has been centered around finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. As he learned of an illness that was quickly taking his mother’s life, Magowitz took on an even greater challenge that was to dedicate his time, money and efforts to finding a cure for the disease. He established the Seena Magowitz Foundation, and for more than a decade has rallied the home furnishings industry to sponsor the cause, which has raised millions of dollars and brought greater awareness and resources to finding a cure for the deadly disease. Customatic has been a committed supporter of the Seena Magowitz Foundation since its founding.

His years of dedication to industry manufacturers and retailers earned him the respect of his peers. Magowitz has served as the charitable advisor for Mattress Firm. He later was appointed executive director of the Mattress Firm Foundation by Steve Stagner, then CEO of Mattress Firm. The foundation benefits the pancreatic cancer research led by Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, distinguished professor and physician-in-chief of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).

Magowitz joined the U.S. Marine Corps. following high school. When he left the service in 1983, he joined Mattress Discounters as a part-time sales associate. In 1987, he was named vice president of the company and offered the opportunity to buy six licenses for the retailer in the Hampton Roads, Va., area. The business grew to a high of 34 stores under the Mattress Discounters and Metropolitan Mattress names. Magowitz founded the Seena Magowitz Foundation in 2001.
