New Hope Housing Unveils New Community with Help from CORT

Furniture World News Desk on 5/5/2018

According to the Houston Coalition for the Homeless, there are 3,412 homeless individuals in Houston, Harris County and Fort Bend County, on any given night. New Hope Housing recently announced that it has partnered with CORT, a part of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, to open its eighth apartment community for local adults living alone on a limited income. New Hope Housing at Harrisburg is a 175-unit single room occupancy (SRO) development with retail and commercial office space in Houston’s historic East End located at 3315 Harrisburg Blvd.

CORT provided furnishings for the entire community at Harrisburg in an effort to turn hope into home for some of Houston’s most vulnerable individuals. Each apartment is a fully furnished efficiency, including a private bathroom and kitchenette, equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. Residents also have access to shared spaces such as a kitchen, business center, library, theatre and dining room, and social service rooms for life skills programs. CORT created an atmosphere of community and engagement in each space to ensure residents feel safe, comfortable and at home.

“Affordable and supportive housing is essential in Houston as rental prices continue to increase,” said Todd Shell, regional manager of supportive housing and treatment facilities at CORT. “CORT is very active in supporting local supportive housing initiatives, and this is just another opportunity for us to lend a helping hand to a community in need.”

New Hope Housing has helped more than 9,500 individuals live in high-quality, affordable housing with access to life-enhancing support services. Residents at the organization’s eight housing developments include the working poor, formerly homeless, veterans, the elderly, the chronically ill, people with cognitive and physical impairments and individuals overcoming substance abuse. As a company dedicated to supporting local causes, CORT jumped at the opportunity to join forces with New Hope Housing in order to make a substantial impact in Houston and address the issue of homelessness, especially as the city copes with rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey, which destroyed many affordable housing apartments.

“Our goal in working with New Hope Housing was to provide an atmosphere where residents feel at home and comfortable to pursue a fresh start in life,” said Shell. “It’s a wonderful experience to be a part of a company like CORT that advocates for issues in local communities. Hopefully this partnership will inspire other companies to help combat homelessness.”

All of New Hope Housing’s properties offer essential on-site support and recovery services to help residents maintain a safe, healthy lifestyle. Available services include case management, primary and mental health care, legal aid, health and nutrition counseling, financial education, life-skills training, and occasionally rental support.
