On the heels of a record-breaking year for its philanthropic Foster Kids Program, Sleep Country USA announced that it has been named a Puget Sound Business Journal Healthy Corporate Champion in the Basic Needs category. One of eight Puget Sound companies honored, Sleep Country created its Foster Kids Program in 2005 to support the nearly 20,000 foster children in the Pacific Northwest through donations of important material items, like clothing, shoes, coats, school supplies, pajamas, and gifts during the holidays to area nonprofit foster organizations who serve them.
The Puget Sound Business Journal Healthy Community Corporate Champion Awards are in collaboration with The Seattle Foundation to embrace its mission to create and sustain a "Healthy Community" — or a community built on the eight strong pillars of Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Economic Opportunity, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness, Neighborhoods & Communities, and Global Giving. Sleep Country USA, along with other winning companies, demonstrated "above and beyond" overall giving, including volunteering, in-kind donations and cash contributions during 2011, embracing corporate philanthropy as part of its culture and showing a significant impact on the community with its giving program.
In 2011, Sleep Country enhanced its Foster Kids Program to broaden its reach and increase its impact with the creation of a new “The Face of Foster Children” advertising campaign, the launch of a robust online donation option, an enhanced “Host a drive” program to provide the community with tools to get involved in drives, expanded partnerships with foster care organizations in Eastern Washington and Idaho, and new cross promotions with local venues and events. The result of these efforts yielded a banner year for the company, collecting more than 101,000 items and more than $141,000 in cash.
“We’re proud to be recognized by the Puget Sound Business Journal as a Healthy Corporate Champion and share this success with our employees, community of individuals and other businesses, and nonprofit partners who contribute heartily to the program’s success,” said Terry Horsley, Vice President Brand Strategy for Sleep Country USA. “Children are the face of our future community and their role in shaping it starts now. Our program’s mission is to make sure these children are equipped with the same tools and basic necessities as their counterparts, giving them a solid foundation for being able to accomplish the same achievements. It’s a small measure that makes an incredibly big difference.”
Sleep Country has been dedicated to giving back to its community since its beginning 20 years ago. Founded on the principle that success is not measured by the bottom line alone, Sleep Country strives to create healthier communities in the Pacific Northwest by making a difference in the lives of the 20,000 foster children in the region. The company’s Foster Kids Program provides a voice for foster children, educating the public about their plight, needs, and unique challenges – and most importantly serves as a reminder that while “not everyone can be a foster parent, anyone can help a foster child”.
