Reverie, a leading manufacturer of innovative sleep systems and adjustable beds, was the focus of an Associated Press national news story last week entitled, “Made in the USA back in style for small businesses.” The company was highlighted as one of a growing number of businesses that are spurring the manufacturing trend known as reshoring, or moving production back to the U.S. In the article, CEO Martin Rawls-Meehan noted that shipping costs from overseas have soared between 50 and 60 percent since the company was founded, one factor in Reverie’s decision to bring some manufacturing home.

“Shipping costs are tremendous. I could put that money into the manufacturing side in the U.S. [In fact] shipping costs have risen to as much as 20 percent of the wholesale cost of a bed made in Asia. In 2004, it was just 10 percent on some of Reverie’s products. So, the company is now making a new line of upscale beds in Silver Creek, N.Y., near Buffalo. Shipping on those beds accounts for no more than 5 percent of the wholesale price. That offsets the higher cost of labor in this country,” he said.
At the beginning of 2013, Reverie announced it would begin the U.S. manufacturing of its popular adjustable bases starting with the company’s latest introduction, the 7S (Supreme). The move allows Reverie to better service its customers, who will benefit from faster turnaround times on orders and added customization capabilities. Reverie points to a dealer’s ability to select from five upholstery color choices for the 7S as one example of the customization capable with domestic production. Reverie is looking to expand U.S. production into other product lines as well.

The Associated Press story also was widely reported throughout the United States and Canada with more than 80 news organizations, such as The Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, Globe and Mail and MSN, featuring it prominently. The complete story can be viewed at
