Article Summary: There is a delicate balance between being over and under stocked. Overcrowded stores overwhelm and confuse shoppers. Stores without enough or too much of the same inventory on the shelves quickly bore customers.

“Shopping is a woman thing. It’s a contact sport like football. Women enjoy the scrimmage, the noisy crowds the danger of being trampled to death, and the ecstasy of the purchase.”
 - Erma Bombeck

This is the fifth installment  in a series or excerpts from a new book by retail furniture store design and planning experts Lou Kief and Bill Walls titled, "Doing Retail Right", a new book available from the major online booksellers in print and e-reader formats. For more information on this book, or to order, visit www.DoingRetailRight.com.

If your store is so crowded and cluttered it looks like a yard sale, you’ve missed the mark. If, on the other hand, your shelves are half empty and customers open your door, look inside and leave without coming in, you’ve also got a problem.

There is a delicate balance between being over and under stocked. Overcrowded stores overwhelm and confuse shoppers. Stores without enough or too much of the same inventory on the shelves quickly bore customers.

When you have it just right, your customer will let you know by staying longer and buying.

No matter how small your space, you need to give people room to move. When you don’t give it to them, and they brush against each other, they lose their train of thought, forget why they came and head for the door.

Remember:
More is not necessarily better, and too much less is nothing.

About The Authors:
Lou Kief & Bill Walls live in Guadalajara, Mexico after a forty year career helping retailers create successful stores. They share their home with Katrina,a huge, not very lady-like, Neapolitan Mastiff, three Mexi-cats; Diego, Frida & Trotsky, and Rocco, a pushy Amazon Parrot.

 Recommendations:

“After building and remodeling over 3 acres of retail space with Lou Kief and Bill Walls I heartily recommend their professionalism, expertise, integrity and creativity! I would invite anyone looking to improve sales performance or their store’s professional appearance to read their book; “Doing Retail Right!” -George Moore, COO, Wilcox Furniture, Corpus Christie, Texas

“You have given RETAIL a BREATH! I am overwhelmed by the scope, the simplicity and the heartfelt delivery.” - Steve Drake, The Villages, Florida

“Retail ideas combined with Life Lessons. I read it as a call to action for veteran retailers who are facing a crossroads.” - Pat West, West Consulting
