The American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) has put out a call for entries in its newly established President’s Award. The President's Award is intended to honor talented young furniture designers annually in conjunction with the Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards which will be presented during Market this year on Friday evening, October 21 at the International Home Furnishings Ballroom. This new award was created to honor the memories of the late David Kline, Roger Schneeman and Alan Friedman, all professional furniture designers and former ASFD presidents since 1997. "In honor of their memories, ASFD will be advancing the cause of design in recognizing excellence and creativity in young furniture designers. The new award will “find talent” and “inspire” up-and-coming designers. It’s intended to give their careers a jumpstart,” says Christine Evans, ASFD Executive Director. The ASFD President's Award is open to any staff or free lance designer who will be under 35 years of age on October 21, 2005. There are no residence requirements, but portfolios will be judged on designs manufactured for the North American retail home furnishings market. ASFD membership is not required. Entrants will submit a portfolio, as well as a statement of their design philosophy and career objectives. In addition, a recommendation from an employer, co-worker or supervisor is required. The criteria for judging will include signs of unusual creativity, exhibited ability to learn and grow and how much the applicant has contributed to the furniture industry. A subcommittee of the 2005 Pinnacle Awards Judges will select the President's Award recipient. An Entry Kit that includes eligibility, judging criteria, entry requirements, deadlines, a list of judges and entry forms can be downloaded from www.asfdpinnacle.com/news.php; or the same can be obtained by contacting Christine Evans at 910 576-1273 or by email at info@asfd.com. In related ASFD news, the Pinnacle Awards Committee is planning a seminar at the inaugural Las Vegas Market on July 27 to promote both the Pinnacle and President’s Awards. ASFD hopes to spread the word about the new Award throughout the furniture industry.
