James Joseph Haverty in 1885 at age 14 invested $600. in a 25 x 75 foot furniture store in Atlanta. He parlayed this into the multi-state Haverty Furniture Industries with 1997 sales of over 500 million dollars. J.J. Haverty and the many family members who led the company are featured in an exhibit on the American Furniture Hall of Fame History Wall in the Furniture Discovery Center. This exhibit is across from the AFHF Member Wall featuring photos and brief bios of the 39 industry pioneers and leaders. "The Furniture Discovery Center Museum invites you to experience the furniture manufacturing process in a streamlined, sophisticated setting with a minimum investment of time. It is located on the corner of Main and Green behind the High Point Convention Center," said Irwin Lowenstein of Rhodes Furniture, AFHF President. "It is a not-to-be-missed educational experience, a must addition to your market schedule. This is true for management and employees .... especially those involved in retail." The American Furniture Hall of Fame is an all industry effort organized to honor those individuals whose outstanding achievements have contributed to the continued growth and development of the American furniture industry and to research, collect and preserve the cultural, economic and artistic history.
