AFMA Backs US Anti-Terrorism Efforts

The American Furniture Manufacturers Association has adopted a resolution to publicly show its support for the government's efforts in battling terrorism. The resolution was passed at AFMA's annual meeting in New York earlier this month. The Association believes that it is one of the first U.S. trade groups to formally show support for the government's dedication to fighting terrorism. In addition to the resolution, many AFMA members have agreed to take personal action to support the cause, including such activities as visiting a Veterans Administration hospital or nursing home, volunteering in their local communities to help make up for service members who are on duty, and helping military families in various ways. "Like many other organizations, the furniture industry is very proud and patriotic," said Albert Prillaman, chairman of Stanley Furniture in Stanleytown, Va., and president of AFMA. "In times like these, we need to show unqualified support to our leaders as they address an enemy that is common to all of us and mankind in general." The AFMA's resolution reads as follows: "Be it resolved that the American Furniture Manufacturers Association proudly pledges its support of our president, George W. Bush, and all those men and women, civilian and military, in our Armed Forces who are committed to bring to justice all terrorists, wherever located, that threaten the safety, security and freedom of the citizens of these United States of America and all other freedom-loving people throughout the world that have joined with us to carry out this undertaking; and Resolved that this association and its members do hereby publicly evidence our pledge of support to the thousands of men and women who are members of the Reserves and National Guard, many of whom are employed in our industry, as well as all Active Duty soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. Resolved that we encourage and solicit similar evidence of support from each and every person and association engaged in the home furnishings industry; and Resolved that we are convinced that every American and every freedom-loving citizen of every other country must stand united until this menace and threat to mankind is ended."
